Facial Skincare Glossary
The terms your esthetician uses, explained plainly. An informed client gets better results.
Comedones
Clogged hair follicles. Open comedones are blackheads. Closed comedones are whiteheads. Both form when sebum and dead skin cells accumulate in the follicle opening.
Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL)
The rate at which water evaporates through the skin barrier. High TEWL indicates a compromised barrier, common in DC's dry winters and heavily air-conditioned offices.
Exfoliation
The removal of dead skin cells from the surface. Chemical exfoliation (AHAs, BHAs) dissolves bonds between cells. Physical exfoliation uses friction. Both reveal newer skin beneath.
Collagen
The structural protein that gives skin its firmness and elasticity. Production declines approximately 1% per year after age 20. Sun exposure and pollution accelerate this loss.
Skin Microbiome
The ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that live on the skin surface. A healthy microbiome protects against inflammation, sensitivity, and infection.
Melanin

Ceramides

Fitzpatrick Scale
A classification system for skin tones I through VI based on how skin responds to UV exposure. It guides treatment intensity decisions, especially for chemical peels and exfoliating treatments.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation
